Spotted: The Importance of Being Wilde
For Starters: Oscar Fingal O´Flahertie Wills Wilde was an Irish Author, born on 16th October in 1854.
His comedic play "The Importance of Being Earnest" was published in 1895 when he was 41 years old.
The protagonists maintain fictitious personae to escape burdensome social obligations. But a marriage and misplaced love leads to confusion and trouble in the late Victorian London.
What for some may be Gigi Hadid, is Oscar Wilde for me: an Inspiration or even Role Model in thinking.
And that´s not coming from his choice of style or good looks, which are hard to find, but rather his wisdom through his work.
To show you what I mean, I created a list of my favourite quotes from "The Importance of Being Earnest" and because just a wall of text can become quite boring, I included some photos of the latest stroll through my neighbourhood.
Enjoy.
☞The very essence of romance is uncertainty.
☞More than half of Modern Culture depends on what one shouldn't read.
☞⌠Being Perfect⌡ would leave no room for developments
and I intend to develop in many directions.
☞Health is the primary duty of life.
☞You see, if one plays good music, people don't listen,
and if on plays bad music,
people don't talk.
☞I have always been of opinion that a man who desires to get married
should either know everything or nothing.
☞Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit;
touch it and the bloom is gone.
☞All women become like their mothers.
That is their tragedy.
No man does.
That´s his.
☞Women only ⌠call each other sister⌡
when they have called each other a lot of other things first.
☞As a man sows so let him reap.
☞People who live entirely for pleasure usually are ⌠unmarried⌡.
☞If I am occasionally over- dressed, I make up for it by being immensely over-educated.
☞The absence of old friends one can endure with equanimity.
But even a momentary separation from anyone to whom one
has just been introduced is almost unbearable.
This quote means a lot to me. Not only because it´s from Mr.Wilde, but because I experienced it myself.
Last year in summer I went to Sweden for three weeks with a youth traveling organisation. There, I met two now very good friends of mine. We talked from the first day through to the day they had to go back home. They only stayed in Sweden for one and a half week.
I remembered crying through the whole day, even when they were still with me. But it was the Thought that we won´t see each other for at least a year.
To refer to the Monthly quote of Charles Dickens:
"The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again."
This quote is actually dedicated to those two friends of mine. One of them I recently met with again, just as predicted, one year later and we went on vacation together.
Sometimes Quotes can really touch you in real life.
☞Well, one must be serious about something,
if one wants to have any amusement in life.
☞Hesitation of any kind is a sign of mental decay in the young, of physical weakness in the old.
Best of Thoughts,
Lena.
